Amesbury, MA – LUNGSTRONG, a nonprofit with the mission of funding innovative lung cancer research, announced today that it has surpassed $5 million raised. This milestone comes just as Lung Cancer Awareness Month begins and the organization kicks off its ’10 Years Strong’ anniversary celebration.

LUNGSTRONG was founded in 2011 by Diane Legg, with the purpose of raising funds for research so that lung cancer would one day be a treatable disease and no longer fatal. Since its inception, LUNGSTRONG has funded over $5,000,000 in lung cancer research for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Mass General Cancer Center through annual events such as their 5k Run/1.5 Mile Walk, the Pan-Mass Challenge, the ‘Live It Up’ celebration, and Cheers to a Cure.

“I’m so grateful for all of our partners, supporters, participants, and donors for helping us reach the amazing milestones of $5 million and 10 years in operation.” says Diane Legg, LUNGSTRONG’s founder and 17-year lung cancer survivor. “There have been many advances over the last 10 years in lung cancer research, with new treatments and screening protocols, but there is still much work to be done to achieve our mission."  continues Legg.

To celebrate LUNGSTRONG’s 10-year anniversary, the organization is planning a variety of activities and events from video messages from doctors and researchers, to a donation match fundraising campaign. A special anniversary campaign webpage has also been created and can be found here. The 10 Years Strong campaign celebration will run through September 2022 and is generously sponsored by New England BioLabs.

“New England BioLabs has been a major sponsor and supporter of LUNGSTRONG over the last three years. They understand how important it is to fund critical research and we’re delighted they are partnering with us again on our anniversary campaign.” said Legg.

“Lung cancer research is consistently underfunded compared to other cancers, yet affects hundreds of thousands each year. LUNGSTRONG continues to do the incredible work of raising money to fund the advancement of lung cancer treatments, and serving as a voice for the lung cancer community. We are happy to celebrate and support their ongoing efforts and this worthy cause.” said Brian Tinger, Corporate Controller at New England BioLabs.

While LUNGSTRONG has been fortunate to have hundreds of volunteers, community business supporters and millions of dollars in donations over the last 10 years, there is more work to be done. Lung cancer remains the number one cancer killer in both men and women, and across all demographics. Behind every lung cancer statistic there is a person, a family, a friend, affected by the disease. Join LUNGSTRONG in its mission to fight lung cancer. Donations of any amount can be made by visiting this anniversary webpage.
